Barlow Triplock
Name: Barlow Triplock
Rank: Candidate, Apprentice Dragonhealer
Age: 17
Birth Date: 2641.01.30
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Somewhere between Heterosexual and Asexual
Craft: Dragonhealer
Craft Rank: Apprentice
Craft Strengths: Though not quite an expert, Barlow has a knack for diagnosis, getting to the root of an ailment quickly. He’s particularly good at healing things that require finesse.
Craft Weaknesses: Barlow is not a particularly good conversationalist, and therefore can have some trouble with bedside manner, being much more dry and informative then others. Also he is rather small, and can have trouble with more labor intensive works.
Appearance:
Barlow is small in build, reaching only five foot three in height. He has dark brown eyes and black hair, but neither of these things make him the least bit imposing. His skin is a olive tone, and his complexion is very even. His hair is cut short, but just long enough that it covers his ears a little bit. In generally he looks a touch skinny, but he is a teenager, so there is a bit of growing going on. He will cap out at five foot four when he is done with his growth though. He is rather flexible and this in conjunction with everything else gives him the ability to get into many places that normal people cannot.
Barlow has very small hands and he is remarkably dexterous, though he doesn’t have very much endurance. His normal movements are minimal, and he often seems very low to the ground even for his size. Small, out of the way, insignificant, these are all things that Barlow appears to be. And that is exactly what he wants.
For clothes, Barlow likes to wear things that are easy to keep neat and clean which providing good mobility. Because of this he hardly ever wears formal items but does almost always look neat. He also likes to wear things with multiple pockets or just has a pouch on his belt. His footwear are usually well worn, but well kept. He isn’t a fan of designs or patterns really, not on anything he has. Simple and neat is his style.
Personality:
Barlow is naturally quiet. This does not come from any amount of shyness or lack of conversation topics, but more from his desire to observe. His choices of people to befriend or talk with is scattered and unpredictable, and it is often impossible to determine what will make him come out of his shell so to speak. Idle conversation doesn’t suit him too well, and if he had nothing to ask, he is content in silence. He doesn’t mind the odd debate, and intensely hates people using the justification that just because they say something, it means that it is true. He would rather hear the reasoning first rather than just take an order, but in his craft, as long as the person giving the order is higher up then him it’s usually not an option.
He has a very strong moral compass, though with his natural inclinations, it can be hard to balance all that he could do with all that he thinks he should do. With quick fingers and silent feet it would be easy to steal as he had need, but he prefers to use sleight of hand for parlor tricks most of the time. This doesn’t hold true for everything, he commonly uses stealth to go out after curfew, but he doesn’t see much of an issue with that, if only because he would just be sitting up with nothing to do. Barlow is quite the insomniac, and as long as he is awake, he wants to be doing something. He doesn’t mind chores, and will just find himself work to do when he is feeling bored. He’ll help out anyone when he is bored, a little more conscious then most about making sure that if there is something that needs to be done, it is better to do it so that things move smoothly.
Barlow’s driving motivation is to prove himself. He knows full well that he can be underestimated, but almost encourages that. He certainly doesn’t mind, he just seems to think that it will be all the better when he can show everyone what he can really do. He is not sure exactly how, but he has a variety of contingencies in place, no matter what fate has in store. However, all of them involve dragons in some way, he just hopes it involves a dragon selecting him.
Likes: Dragonkin, being unnoticed, people with a strong moral compass.
Dislikes: Being patronized, people who don’t do the right thing, illogical arguments.
History:
Barlow was born to two dragon riders, a Blue rider and a Green rider at Southern Weyr. As a Weyrbrat, he was shown that all around him were dragons, and from what he could tell, it was everything in life. His parents were always pleased to be around their partners, their lifemates, and Barlow took it to mean that he should expect that as well. As he grew, he came to understand that life was not always to be this way. He saw people never impress, passed over time and time again for others. He watched and understood, failure was an option.
He was smart and restless as he grew up, something that often got him into trouble when he was young. He got into trouble as all young boys do, but very quickly learned that getting into trouble hurt others. It took time, but he learned to divert his energy that could be used to trouble others into other things that would still be fun. Hide and seek was a favorite game of his, and he was always good at it. Even more so, he learned the art of sleight of hand, entertaining the few friends he had with little tricks and games. Though it was not the set of skills parents would ever really want a child to have, Barlow never seemed to abuse them, except the odd times he was caught out in the middle of the night. After a while, he stopped getting caught, but he didn’t feel any need to change his habits.
When he was old enough he became an Apprentice Dragonhealer, enjoying the chance to take a trade that had him so close to dragons. It was not work to be taken lightly, which he also appreciated. Even so, he was not content to be merely able to heal dragons, he wanted one of his own. He did, however, not wish to rush anything. What good came from merely being impressed first? No, he was willing to bide his time, and wait. Eventually his parents were to be some of the few to go off to the new Illuay Weyr, and likewise, he would go too. He felt no aversion toward leaving his long time home, as he had never been friend heavy. He did properly say good bye to those he did have, wishing them well as they went their own way. A new Weyr would, no doubt, be a good place to prove himself.
He continued learning his trade, and hoping for a dragon. The later was not to be. He continued to learn the ins and outs of his new home, watching as time brought changes to the Weyr, the rise of a new Weyrwoman, the fall of the old, and the arrival of a new Goldrider. He observed them all, interested, but not involved. Still, with two Queens in the weyr, would there not be more dragons that would come to choose him? Only time would tell.
Will: Let him vanish. He is good at that…
